As one of the Seven Wonders of the World and being visited by millions of visitors every year, it would be totally weird if I didn't feature a piece on the spectacular Rome Colosseum in Italy.
The Colosseum is the most famous tourist attraction of Rome with entry tickets costing around €20 (EURO). I highly recommend booking online by clicking here as the queues are usually pretty terrible.
As you can see in the photos, the views around the Colosseum grounds are equally as breath-taking.
Below I have featured 10 interesting facts about the Rome Colosseum;
1) The Colosseum was built between 72 A.D and 80 A.D under the Emperor Vespasian, in the heart of Ancient Rome.
2) The Colosseum was built from concrete and stone using the man-power of over 60,000 Jewish slaves.
3) The Colosseum is the largest amphitheater in the world measuring 189m long, 156m wide and 50m high.
4) This brilliant building had 80 entrances and could seat approximately 50,000 spectators who would come to watch sporting events and games. These events included gladiatorial combats and wild animal hunts.
5) Festivals as well as games could last up to 100 days in the Colosseum.
6) The events at the Colosseum were seriously brutal with around 10,000 animals killed in a single day.
7) The Ancient Romans would sometimes flood the Colosseum and have miniature ship naval battles inside as a way of entertainment.
8) Many natural disasters devastated the structure of the Colosseum, but it was the earthquakes of 847 AD and 1231 AD that caused most of the damage you see today.
9) Below the Colosseum were numerous rooms and underground passages - There were also 36 trap doors in the arena for special effects!
10) The original name of the Colosseum was Flavian Amphitheater, after the Flavian Dynasty of Emperors.
